By Erika Knight

Wool Local by Erika Knight offers a luxurious blend of Bluefaced Leicester and hardwearing Masham, in a fine 4ply weight.

Erika’s catalyst for creating this yarn was to support the heritage of British textile mills and to promote sheep breeds native to the United Kingdom.

Starting at the British wool auction in Bradford, the wool is scoured, combed, spun, dyed, steamed and hanked all in the county of Yorkshire, making fleece to finished yarn in less than 50 miles.

With its delightful aroma and sumptuous hand-feel it is perfect for shawls and lightweight garments to transition the seasons.

Wool Local is a truly local wool, authentically British and environmentally sustainable.

WORKING THE YARN

Wool Local is suitable for a range of knit, crochet and weaving projects. We’ve included gauge suggestions for these crafts below. You may also like to check out our project suggestions on RAVELRY.

This yarn does have a rustic hand-feel. Some may sense a slight pique when worn against the skin, particularly around delicate areas such as the neck. When planning a project, it may be useful to wear a swatch of the intended fabric for a short time to gauge your sensitivity.

GAUGE SUGGESTIONS

The gauge information below can be used as guidance when planning your projects. We always recommend that you swatch to determine a configuration that results in the ideal fabric and hand feel for your project.

KNITTING

28 stitches over 10cm, using 3.25mm needles (7 stitches per inch, US size 3 needles)

CROCHET

32 stitches over 10cm, 3.5mm hook (8 stitches per inch, US size E-4 hook)

WEAVING FOR YARDAGE

10-12 epi (40-50 ends / 10cm)

FINISHING

The true texture and appearance of the yarn remains hidden until a final wash fluffs and softens the fibres.

To block or wash your piece, prepare a bath of tepid water and if desired add a few drops of mild detergent or wool wash. Immerse the finished piece and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Lift the piece from the water and allow to drain. Gently remove excess water by pressing the fabric between layers of a dry towel. Lay flat to dry.
