Introducing Hamelton No. 1 by BC Garn

Hamelton No. 1 by BC Garn is a lustrous 100% wool yarn with a classic 2-ply construction.

Soft and squishy with a slightly rustic hand-feel, the lustrous fibres of Hamelton No. 1 absorb dye well for a palette of bold saturated hues.

In the knitted fabric the 2-ply construction will impart a slightly textured surface and given time the fibres will halo adding softness to the resulting fabric. Together these elements make this yarn a great choice for chunky lace motives and colourwork details.

We recommend Hamelton No. 1 for knit and crochet pieces intended for outerwear - we’re thinking jumpers, cardigans, vests and hats - making for a wardrobe of versatile pieces the whole family can enjoy.

*This yarn is no longer available at Loom + Spindle. We suggest Bio-Wool as a substitute.

WORKING THE YARN

Hamelton No. 1 is suitable for a range of knit and crochet projects. We’ve included gauge suggestions for these crafts below. You may also like to check out our project suggestions on RAVELRY.

This yarn is spun with an intended soft and squishy hand-feel. This is achieved by using a short staple fibre and milling with a looser twist, both elements that can contribute to pilling. We recommend working the yarn at the firmer end of the gauge spectrum to help minimise pilling.

This yarn does have a rustic hand-feel. Some may sense a slight pique when worn against the skin, particularly around delicate areas such as the neck. When planning a project, it may be useful to wear a swatch of the intended fabric for a short time to gauge your sensitivity.

This yarn is spun with an intended soft and squishy hand-feel. This is achieved by using a fine staple fibre and milling with a looser twist, both elements that can contribute to pilling. We recommend working the yarn at the firmer end of the gauge spectrum to reduce pilling.

The colours used to dye this yarn are produced according to GOTS standards, this includes restrictions on certain chemicals that aid light-fastness.In exceptional cases, placing yarn or projects in direct sunlight for extended periods of time may affect light-fastness.

FINISHING

The true texture and appearance of the yarn remains hidden until a final wash fluffs and softens the fibres. Prepare a bath of tepid water and if desired add a few drops of mild detergent or wool wash. Immerse the finished piece and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Lift the piece from the water and allow to drain. Gently remove excess water by pressing the fabric between layers of a dry towel. Lay flat to dry.
